ABSTRACT

We hope that Chapter 1 has whetted your appetite to learn more about AAA and AAAT. Before we go further however, we want to acquaint you with the approach behind the interventions described in the subsequent chapters of this book. This chapter provides an overview of solution-focused therapy (SFT) which was created in the late 1960s by Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer. Their writings (Berg 1994, 1995; de Shazer, 1985, 1988, 1991, 1994; DeJong & Berg 2002; Miller & Berg, 1995; Miller & de Shazer, 1998) were instrumental to our understanding of this approach and continue to be among our favorite professional texts. This overview will be helpful for readers unfamiliar with SFT, and will serve as a refresher for those already knowledgeable about the approach. By the end of this chapter you will have acquired the basic knowledge needed to utilize solution-focused therapy whether or not you are including animals in the therapy session.
