Introduction

Korean Buddhism and Confucianism have played significant parts in the development ofKorean culture and have made unique contributions to the growth of each of these religious traditions generally. Although much is made of Japanese Zen Buddhism in courses which deal with the history of world religions, Korean Son Buddhism not only was established earlier than the Japanese form of meditative Buddhism, but it has been the predominant form of Korean monastic Buddhism since the tenth century.
