ABSTRACT

Lucy is 21 and excited about leaving school this year. Both she and her parents are interested in Lucy going to work once she completes her school year. In preparation for Lucy’s life after school, her transition coordinator scheduled a meeting with Lucy, her mother, case manager, rehabilitation counselor, teacher, and paraprofessional to make the fi nal arrangements. As soon as the meeting began, the case manager stated that there was a waiting list for developmental disability services so there were no options available to her. Immediately everyone around the table talked about budget cuts, the poor economy, and the dismal prospects for employment in the community. The meeting ended with no provisions or plan for Lucy’s post-school outcome. The team talked about her completing the school year and staying home with her mother until another opportunity for services became available.
