ABSTRACT

Th e previous chapter off ered common-sense responses to reduce a variety of access barriers that can be found in the physical and social environments in schools. In this chapter, we off er an overview of curriculum planning practices useful for inclusive teaching. Curriculum is a course of study in which learners engage over time, and generally refers to the range of classes or areas of study off ered by a school or program. For teachers, curriculum planning involves laying out areas of study students will learn, learning teaching methods useful to students’ learning in the areas, and developing assessments to understand how students are learning. We begin with a brief history of curriculum in special education, followed by an overview of key concepts in curriculum planning that emphasize Universal Design for Learning. We end with an overview of teaching practices useful to the development of inclusive curriculum.
