ABSTRACT
The history of the psychology of memory is replete with instances of controversy about how to explain certain empirical findings. Established theories have suffered modifications and a “loss of faith” as a result of the inability to predict and explain a single finding. This chapter provides an illuminating case study of research into one such finding in memory research, namely, the bow-shaped serial position function.
