ABSTRACT
T here are two characteristics of judging merit that are the same as those found in predicting important human outcomes. The judgment of merit is diffi cult, just as it is diffi cult to predict such important human outcomes as staying out of jail on parole or succeeding in medical school. The judgment of merit is also multifaceted, just as many characteristics of humans must be considered simultaneously to predict what will happen to them or what they will do.
