ABSTRACT

In chapter 2, we saw that two levels of conciliation are enacted in the talking-and-thinking of Jo Berry and Pat Magee when they come face-to-face. In their talk about the conciliation process, the process itself becomes the discourse topic, as in the opening extract. They also ‘do’ conciliation in the sense that their discourse activity works towards increasing understandings of each other. And of course both of these levels can be enacted in a single utterance. This chapter focuses on two systematic metaphors that came to frame the conciliation process.
