ABSTRACT

G iven the many diseases that cause dementia, the presence and severity of eating and swallowing problems in persons with dementia are deter-mined by the specifi c neuropathological process. Eating and swallowing problems are of the utmost concern in the care of persons with dementia, particularly in nursing home settings, due to the impact of these problems on overall health (e.g., nutrition, hydration, and respiratory health). Malnutrition and dehydration may exacerbate further cognitive defi cits, in addition to causing other medical problems. This chapter will outline the range of problems and assessment procedures related to eating and swallowing as dementia progresses, as well as the variety of treatment approaches useful for enhancing the dining experience.
