ABSTRACT

Three successive phases of generational relations are known to characterize generational relations between parents and their children (Morioka, 1996). In the first phase, parents support the younger generation by providing care and financial support; then parents support the younger generation in the care of grandchildren; and in the final phase, the direction of assistance is from the younger generation to parents. This cycle of care permeates multigenerational family care, with the roles of caregivers and care recipients evolving and changing over the life span of the family.
