ABSTRACT

Clearly, different strategies and actions were used in different contexts to ensure that the “vision of 2050” was achieved and that there was a move to “sustainability” – including efforts to eliminate the extremes of wealth and poverty and reach a convergence in consumption levels. It was seen as necessary to have a unifying element to all these strategies and actions in order to ensure that humanity reached its common goal, and this unifying element was a global, directional cultural shift. What happened to the environment between 2010 and 2050 depended very much on the decisions taken over that period by individuals and communities, and nations at the global level.
