ABSTRACT
Having clarified the argument of the Rules and established something of the character of the way it was written, it is now possible to test the major criticisms against the logic of Durkheim’s methodological position. Hence what is proposed is in no sense an exhaustive assessment of the range of criticisms, but to try to use this partial assessment as a way of investigating the subtlety of Durkheim’s position.
