ABSTRACT

Transport is one of the largest industries in the world, encompassing passenger and freight transport and underpinning the tourism industry and most forms of trade. As an industry, transport is often overlooked and seen only as a facilitator of other more glamorous activities. Yet its environmental impact counterbalances its economic necessity, and as awareness of climate change develops, priorities around transport policy have sought a more sustainable position at the nexus of social interaction and facilitation. Discourse on sustainable development is not new, and can provide valuable insight into factors necessary for the evolution of the transport network.
