ABSTRACT

Safran (1993) describes three types of therapeutic alliance rupture which he identi®ed in an analysis of therapeutic dialogue:

1 The patient misperceives what the therapist says in line with the patient's own way of construing events; that is, the person interprets the response to ®t his own core interpersonal schema or basic mindset concerning relationships. For example, the person may experience as threatening an intervention which by most people would be experienced as facilitative.
