ABSTRACT

In my earlier work, How to Talk to a Narcissist (2008b), I describe how depressive narcissistic disturbances occur when the narcissist is depleted of his/her narcissistic supplies-e.g., loss of power, fame, youth, money-and has exhausted his/her narcissistic suppliers (self-objects that support and mirror them). is is in sharp contrast to the depressive borderline, who does not feel depleted because he or she never had or wanted power, fame, or money in the rst place. Where narcissists are concerned about proving a special sense of existence, evidenced by their successes and possessions, borderlines are busy trying to prove they exist in and of themselves. “When I cut my wrists, it hurts; but at least I know I am alive.” Proving their existence becomes the most compelling force in the borderline’s narrow world (Lachkar, 2008b).
