ABSTRACT

Summary: Concentration on countries as such may give a misleading picture of the degree of specialisation or diversity in an economy; there may be risk-avoidance through diversification at the individual or company level, while a country’s economy as a whole may be apparently specialised. Government policies for fiscal diversification may frustrate the process of structural diversification. Examples are given from studies of South Pacific economies.
