ABSTRACT

A question may be raised as to why alternative integration possibilities need be studied, since only one of the five countries has the 'freedom' of choice, so to speak. The answer is that the economic advantages and disadvantages of joining economic blocs can only be evaluated if each country's present position is contrasted with at least one alternative. Such a comparison between the 'present' and 'implied' situation may lead to suggestions as to what co-ordinated action may have to be taken by the individual countries. For instance, it might be feasible for Jamaica to make arrangements with CACM while continuing to be a member of CARIFT A. Conversely, the

conclusion might be reached that the 'present' situation is the optimum as far as the Jamaican economy is concerned.
