ABSTRACT

Other habitats familiar to golfers, such as calcareous grassland as found on chalk downland, have exhibited even more dramatic declines. In 1811 there were 27,694 ha of chalk grassland yet in 1967 a detailed survey showed that only 3,285 ha were left, whilst in 1972 there were only 2,268 ha. The loss between 1934 and 1972 was 71-77% Most of Great Britain including the “semi-natural” is a managed environment. How that management is done, either with nature in mind or without regard to it, determines the fate of most of Britain’s wildlife. Golf courses likewise are managed environments and can be considered on the same basis.
