ABSTRACT

Introduction Results of clinical visual evaluation of many professional golfers suggested an apparent relationship between putting inconsistency and instability of the oculomotor system as indexed by fixation disparity measures. Fixation disparity is a small unnoticeable misalignment of the eyes which is present in varying magnitudes for different people. It is thought to be important in regulating the vergence (aiming) posture of one eye relative to the other, and can be modified through training procedures or through wear of ophthalmic lenses or prisms. Clinicians often interpret the presence of fixation disparity as being associated with stress upon either the visual motor or visual sensory processes which govern eye position and vergence eye movement. These same visual motor and visual sensory processes contribute information used in visual judgement of target location.
