ABSTRACT

The traditional method of club design is by producing a model, usually a mid-range iron, with those features thought to enhance club performance. After play testing and modification a complete set of master models would be produced, which would effectively become the design specification. This still tends to be the situation today, with only occassionally clubs being produced from engineering drawings. The dies for forgings or moulds in the case of castings would then be produced from these master models. Although most companies design to some basic criteria or standards e.g. lie and loft angles and weight; generally few clubs are produced to engineering drawings.
