ABSTRACT

Like the preceding chapter, this one will be kept brief. In it, we discuss variations in the way European borrowings are adapted to MCA from one region to another. Whereas the bulk of this publication deals with borrowings attested in the Fes/Meknes area (with data from other areas added in the appendices to shed historical light), here we are focally concerned with two other nearby dialects. First, we discuss European borrowings in the distinctive northern MCA dialect of Tetouan (in the zone of Spanish rather than French colonial influence), then we consider Algerian dialects. Our material in both cases is rather limited, but does permit us to identify certain significant variations.
