ABSTRACT
Kathleen Gallagher is a Professor, Canada Research Chair, and the Academic Director of the Centre for Urban Schooling at the University of Toronto. Dr Gallagher’s book The theatre of urban: Youth and schooling in dangerous times (University of Toronto Press, 2007) is based on a three-year ethnographic study of four secondary schools in New York City and Toronto. Her book Drama education in the lives of girls: Imagining possibilities (University of Toronto Press, 2000) received the American Education Research Association’s book award for a significant contribution to Curriculum Studies in 2001. Her two edited collections are How theatre educates: Convergences and counterpoints with artists, scholars, and advocates (University of Toronto Press, 2003) and The methodological dilemma: Creative, critical and collaborative approaches to qualitative research (Routledge, 2008). Dr Gallagher has published many articles on theatre, urban youth, pedagogy and gender, and travels widely, giving international addresses and workshops for practitioners. Her research continues to focus on questions of engagement and artistic practice, as well as the pedagogical and methodological possibilities of learning through the theatre.
