ABSTRACT

Anna Botsford Comstock (1854-1930) developed nature-study materials for elementary teachers to use in their classrooms and put considerable eff ort into convincing teachers and school administrators about the importance of teaching nature study. She is best known for writing the book, Handbook of Nature-Study1 (Comstock, 1911/2010), which is a compilation of the nature-study lessons she and others developed. Th is chapter provides a brief historical overview of Comstock’s career, a description of her philosophy and methods of teaching nature study, and a discussion of the experiential foundations of that practice.
