ABSTRACT

Mention the Grand Tetons, National Outdoor Leadership School, or the Wilderness Education Association and the name, Paul Petzoldt, immediately springs to mind. Considered by many as the pioneer of outdoor adventure education in North America, Paul Petzoldt has left an enduring impression on outdoor adventure educators around the world. Petzoldt’s many fi rst ascents, establishment of the American School of Mountaineering in the Grand Tetons in 1929, and his educational practices have certainly shaped contemporary outdoor adventure education and experiential education.
