ABSTRACT

The educational ideologies of conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats influence the educational policies emerging from the governance structure discussed in Chapter 3. The educational ideas of conservatives and liberals are in turn influenced by the public and civil society as discussed in Chapters 2 and 4. Many of civil society’s organizations espouse different variations on human capital ideology including those that embody a conservative religious agenda, socially liberal values, and free market and government regulated economic models. There exist alternative educational ideologies that reject human capitalism and focus on education for social justice and environmentalism and the arts. These educational ideologies have found their place nationally in the third party campaigns of Ralph Nader and the Green Party. However, human capital ideology with its different variations remains dominant.
