ABSTRACT
Although psychiatry long harboured ambitions to be recognised as a ‘science’, this remains unfulfilled. Today, ‘mental health’ is clearly an institution, complete with its own methods, customs and practices, if not also formal ceremonies. It has the support of the law and a public presence, if no longer in the form of the intimidating asylum, then signposted through a wealth of ‘therapeutic services’ and ‘therapeutic settings’.
