ABSTRACT

Believing that we are able to tolerate (as opposed to not tolerate) the discomfort of facing adversities is a key ingredient of psychological health. As used here discomfort is a generic term which points to a negative felt sense that we experience when such adversities happen to us and to those whom we care about. Such discomfort may be acute or it may be chronic. It may involve the pain when we get what we don't want or the displeasure of being deprived of what we do want.
