ABSTRACT

The chapters of this book constitute a systematic and far-reaching attempt to understand low carbon urban transitions. The book has brought together contributions from different disciplinary, geographical, political and epistemological positions to illuminate, interrogate and reflect upon a variety of aspects of what the contributors have both explicitly labelled and implicitly referred to as urban transitions. The theoretical, conceptual, methodological and empirical breadth of these contributions allows us to return to the question that we outlined at the beginning of the book: how, why, and with what implications, are cities effecting low carbon transitions? Reflecting on the contributions in relation to this question leads to five critical conclusions that synthesise arguments, critically engage with key issues and open up a future urban transitions research agenda.
