ABSTRACT

The history of Bahrain Stock Market goes back to 1957 when the National Bank of Bahrain was made public. After almost 32 years of its existence, the government of Bahrain promulgated a legislative decree to establish an independent body namely the Bahrain Stock Exchange (BSE) in 1987. The body, which is chaired by the Minister of Commerce and Agriculture, was entrusted to regulate the stock market and to act as the Securities Exchange Commission. It consists of nine members, including the deputy chairman who represents the Ministry of Commerce and Agriculture, a member from each of the Ministry of Finance and National Economy and Bahrain Monetary Agency (BMA) and three members elected by the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry and two members representing auditing firms who are in turn selected by the Board's Chairman.
