ABSTRACT

Business tenancies are subject to detailed legislation regulating the relationship between landlord and tenant in relation to the renewal of leases and security of tenure for occupying tenants. This chapter examines the effect of a number of statutes, principally the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 and amendments. The property manager is central to the management and oversight of landlord-tenant relationships in business premises and requires a detailed grasp of the operation of the relevant legal background. A body of case law has built up over the years; a selection of the more important decisions is included. Flow charts give an initial view of parts of the legislation.
