ABSTRACT
After the signing of the Sugar Agreement of June 1972, the first decision which had to be made was the siting of the scheme. Three sites were examined – one on the Blue Nile near Sennar and two on the White Nile, south of Kosti. Investigation soon showed that the area around the village of Sufiya, near Kosti, had the best combination of natural resources and other facilities. At the selected site, the fertile, alluvial soils of the Blue Nile flood plain extended close to the course of the White Nile with its abundant surplus water. It was also relatively close to the main railway line and to the electricity supply to the town of Rabak, 27 kilometres north-west, which also had a cement factory and nearby supplies of sand and gravel. The project was duly christened Kenana.
