ABSTRACT

Among the colder of the elements affecting the current climate for socialism is the wind of privatisation. In almost every area of public activity the present Government has proposed, advocated and, in some cases, implemented policies for substantially reducing the role of the state. The profitable parts of nationalised industries and state services are being sold off to the private sector. Currently unprofitable parts are being ruthlessly cut so as to facilitate their eventual sale. And state subsidies to the private manufacturing and services sectors are being systematically withdrawn.
