ABSTRACT

In earlier chapters we have discussed the possibility of defusing problem anger at the point at which the early warning signs of an angry outburst are identified. We have also identified ways of trying to avoid the storm, either through environmental means (e.g. systemic approaches) or through defusing individual anger (e.g. by using calming techniques). The importance of teaching children and young people alternative ways of viewing the behaviours of other people, and more effective ways to communicate strong feelings, has also been discussed. There will be times, however, when all the appropriate measures are in place to reduce the probability of an angry outburst, but we still have to respond

that they are unable to be rational and to see someone else’s point of view. At this point we need to know how to minimise the effects of a young person’s ‘explosion’.
