ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how students perceive and react to educational activity in very personal and individualised ways. It focuses on what we know about motivational processes in students, and their emotional reactions to their experiences at school. Part of this will involve examining how students understand the causes of academic success and failure, and how this impacts on their academic selfesteem. As you will see, it has also been suggested that teachers can unintentionally influence these interpretations and influence student progress at school. We will also consider the issue of stress in the classroom, for both students and teachers.
