ABSTRACT

Gerontology and geriatric healthcare are burgeoning specialties answering the call for response to an array of issues and needs of a population group that will soon represent a majority in many societies. Aside from the shortage of gerontological health specialists needed by some older people, the reality is that primary care providers are front and center in their role with this population group whether by choice or client demand. Mirroring to some extent a society-wide pattern and a youth-focused culture, until recently, healthcare curricula have directed minimal attention to the needs of older people.
