ABSTRACT

Where to start? Is that what you are thinking right now? This chapter will talk you through the appraisal process-the term used to evaluate and classify records. Effective appraisal has several facets and will often require assessments of both the content and the context of documents. Personally, I think it is a project team task to conduct an appraisal of

records; however, this will depend entirely on the size of the organization and on whether resource is available. Otherwise, the records manager will need to conduct an individual assessment, but may need to seek advice from the creator of the record or, at minimum, from the creator’s department or the line of business to which the record belongs.
