ABSTRACT

As we are focusing on areas of the setting which children use rather than areas of the curriculum, in this chapter the decision has been made to concentrate on particular aspects of literacy. The aspects are children’s literacy development that will be considered in this chapter are speaking, listening, reading and authorship. It is these skills that are most usually based in and around the book corner, although, as we shall see, there are opportunities to meet up with one’s favourite stories and to think up new ones in many different areas of a well-run setting. Other aspects of literacy such as writing will not be ignored but explored in depth in Chapter 9.
