ABSTRACT

The Black Power Movement developed in the context of the US Civil Rights Movement but diverged from the non-violent stance adopted by Martin Luther King. Stokely Carmichael consolidated the term whilst he was head of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and Black Power became a rallying point for a diverse range of AfricanAmericans. The emphasis on racism and the importance of consciousnessraising to promote black pride were distinctive features of this movement. Malcom X and the Nation of Islam were key in arguing for the importance of racial self-determination that had to be part of equality. The emphasis on autonomous black associations and political organisations was a key part in the pursuit of self-determination.
