ABSTRACT

One of the concepts central to an understanding of spirituality is ‘transcendence,’ which carries at least two meanings: fi rstly, going beyond certain limits, surpassing or exceeding; and secondly, superior or supreme. Both meanings are clearly apparent in talk of God. The transcendent deity is seen both as a being who goes beyond our world, nature, the universe, time, and so on; and as one who is seen as omnipotent-as superior to us mortals, as supreme.
