ABSTRACT

Introduction One outstanding feature of globalization is growing labour mobility across geographical and national boundaries, offering more opportunities for less developed countries to develop its labour export industry for the advanced economies. A good example is the emergence of the international IT and nursing professional labour markets in recent years, leading to the migration of skilled labour from developing countries to developed countries. By contrast, relatively few people are aware of the global labour market for seafarers (GLM) established in the late 1970s – the first globalized labour market in the world.
