ABSTRACT

Going-over and going-around We have been discussing patterns of movement which I think of as dynamicstructures, dynamic in the sense that they are formed not only in space but in time too. Dynamic-structures seem to emerge in the primate’s actions and interactions within the environment and become grouped together to form classes. Members of different classes can also combine with each other in many ways and form hybrids. We have considered going-along, going-up, goingdown and point-of-arrival. These also emerge in human infancy and I refer to them as Second Generation Structure. They will reappear shortly in this chapter but entwined with the developmental trajectories of two other important Second Generation Structures explored by child and chimpanzee – going-over and going-around. Like the other structures we have considered, both these seem to form overarching, emergent concepts containing a variety of related structures.
