ABSTRACT

I have tried to show how the new understanding of the person developed by both Berdyaev and Jung takes shape within the context of the crisis of historical Christianity, which was epitomized by Nietzsche. If God is dead, so is the imago dei in man. The source of integrality in the psyche, and with it the personality, disintegrates: ‘The destruction of the God-image is followed by the annulment of the human personality’ (Jung 1951: para. 170). But ‘is God really dead, because Nietzsche declared that he had not been heard of for a long time? May he not have come back in the guise of the superman?’ (Jung 1944: para. 560).
