ABSTRACT

Utilizing a small group format, parents are trained in basic childcentered play therapy (CCPT) principles and skills. As in CCPT, Child Parent Relationship Therapy is not focused on solving specific problems or a “quick fix,” but rather is structured to enhance the relationship, in this case between the parent and child, with the parent serving as the therapeutic agent of change. Play is the primary way children express themselves and work through issues. Therefore, CPRT/filial therapy utilizes play as the means to facilitate interaction and enhance the relationship between parent and child. Parents practice these new skills with their child in weekly 30-minute special play sessions and report their experiences to the group.
