ABSTRACT

The major focus of this session is supporting and encouraging parents as they learn and practice their new play session skills. No new material is introduced to avoid overwhelming parents. As in each of the remaining training sessions, the majority of the session is spent on parents’ reports of home play sessions, with the most time allocated to reviewing the video(s) of the 1-2 parents who volunteered to be videotaped for this week’s focused supervision. A specific focus during group supervision is on increasing parents’ self-awareness of their own feelings, particularly in relation to their children. The therapist also uses supervision and feedback to review and reinforce previously taught CPRT principles and skills, with an emphasis on the filial play session “Dos.” The partial transcript of CPRT training Session 5 included at the end of this chapter provides the reader with an illustration of how the experienced filial therapist facilitates and utilizes group dynamics to spontaneously review and reinforce basic filial play session skills, including limit setting, while providing dynamic support and encouragement to parents.
