ABSTRACT

To qualify as a competent sandplay therapist, one must study and understand symbols. In order to be certified as a clinical member of the International Society of Sandplay Therapy or Sandplay Therapists of America, a therapist must write a symbol paper that meets the ISST’s or the STA’s standards of the association. In an article that Barbara Weller wrote, entitled “So you have to write a symbol paper!”, Weller clearly spelled out that in order to really understand and to write about a symbol, one must relate it to one’s personal experience; know its objective data; learn about its meaning in traditional religions, mythological creation stories, and fairy tales; and know its meanings as commonly understood in Jungian analytical theories.
