ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a multilayered model of intervening with problem pupils, their families and the larger school system. The therapeutic work takes place in an education-based multi-family context, with families providing peer support as well as challenging one another. This unique approach was pioneered at the Marlborough Family Service and has subsequently been replicated in many different settings in the United Kingdom and in several European countries. The work is carried out both via a ‘Family School’ and ‘Family Classes’ – the former being a bespoke off-site unit and the latter being based in mainstream schools. In addition, parallel work with teachers, schools and the wider education system takes place.
