ABSTRACT

In this chapter I will examine the authentic assessment of the two basic elements of oral production: listening and speaking (or aural/oral as it was referred to in the early days).

Based on the assumption that listening and speaking are inseparable skills in oral communication, testing listening is not discussed in a separate chapter in this book. Instead, it will be treated as a major component of the speaking skill. As Hughes (2003) argues, successful interaction in a language involves comprehension as well as production.
