ABSTRACT
In gathering together information and statistics about health care provisions in Japan we have tried to go beyond the usual bland presentation that might characterize official publications on the subject and we have consciously aimed to include our own assessments and criticism. In making his conclusions about health care in Japan today Masahira Anesaki undoubtedly brings into play greater knowledge of and insight into the workings of Japanese society and the Japanese mentality, an armamentarium of basic background information and sensitivity which might elude the short-term resident. But perhaps at the same time the relatively unbiased eye of the outsider (Margaret Powell) can see some things in sharper perspective.
