ABSTRACT

Teachers faced with a child who is persistently disruptive, who has poor concentration and is easily distracted, or who has possibly even been suspended or excluded from school, should consider ADHD as a possible cause of this. Teachers should have sufficient insight and awareness of ADHD to be able to alert parents that it is a possible reason for the behaviour. Parents can then choose to seek a specialist assessment to establish whether or not their child has ADHD. Schools are increasingly looking at ways of identifying or screening for ADHD at a young age. Although an accurate diagnosis should only be made by an experienced clinician, teachers and parents can become well-informed about the condition and its core symptoms.
