ABSTRACT

It is easy to underestimate how uncomfortable school can be for a child with ADHD. A child who cannot sit still, cannot remember what has just been said, cannot copy accurately from the board and who finds it difficult to make and keep friends can find school a hostile place. Such a child’s wonderful qualities and creativity may get lost in the struggle. Academic underachievement, behavioural problems and socialising difficulties, together with coexisting problems such as specific learning difficulties, depression or anxiety, may further complicate the situation. Children with ADHD have a wide range of difficulties, and no two pupils will be the same; thus there can be a wide range of needs within the classroom.
