ABSTRACT

A number of other conditions have been found to coexist with ADHD and form an extended Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder syndrome. These conditions are more likely to occur in children with ADHD, complicating their symptoms and increasing the risk of psychiatric, educational and other problems. Disruptive behaviour disorders such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder or Conduct Disorder are relevant to teachers because of the persistent behavioural problems and the increased risk of school exclusion in this group. These complications are more common in people with combined or hyperactive/impulsive ADHD, while those with inattentive ADHD are more likely to have associated depression, anxiety and learning difficulties. Whether one condition causes the other, or vice versa, or whether they are just more likely to occur together, is as yet unclear.
